The stars of the show so far, J. Arun Kumar and Manish Pandey, flopped when it mattered most. Belagavi thus lost the plot and Bangalore Rural recorded a five-wicket victory to claim the inaugural KPL Twenty20 cricket tournament and a cheque of Rs 8 lakh at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday. Set to score 123 to win, Bangalore Rural notched up the required runs for the loss of five wickets with four balls to spare. Openers Manjunath (23) and Thilak Naidu (33) gave Rural a promising start with a 48- run stand. They ensured that it did not go waste as they compiled the runs with patience and confidence to romp home. Medium pacer Vinay Kumar, however, rocked their smooth-sailing boat picking up two wickets. But Sunil Kumar Jain (28 not out) and Anirudh Joshi (8 not out) stayed together to the very end and carried their team to a glorious victory. Earlier, J. Arun Kumar, the tournament’s highest scorer with 320 runs in eight games, and Manish Pandey, the only centurion of the tournament, were back in the pavilion with just 32 runs on the board. Belagavi scored 122 for 7 at 6.10 runs an over. Belagavi won the toss and elected to bat. Nine runs in Aiyappa’s first over on a wicket where the ball came rather slowly, a towering six in the very second over that Vinay Kumar struck off Sunil Raju as he lunged into the well pitched up delivery on the bounce, raised hopes of a familiar Belagavi blazing total. But they flatttered only to deceive. Arun Kumar was bowled by Aiyappa as he completely missed the line of a yorker length delivery. Manish Pandey walked in and after a few flicks here and there and surviving a run out following a mix up, played a rather tentative shot as he spooned a catch to Manjunath at mid on as leggie Anand Katti held back a little for four runs. Vinay Kumar 34 (39b, 2x4, 1x6) and wicketkeeper Vinayak Uthappa 45 (31b, 2x4, 2x6) then pieced together a useful stand and were instrumental in their team reaching the shores of respectability. Belagavi made 53 in 10 overs, 77 in 15, 100 in 17.3 and 122 in 20 overs. That best sums up their laboured batting. |
