Karnataka paceman Abhimanyu Mithun, who broke into the Indian Test squad for the Nagpur game against South Africa, has been included in the national one-day team for the final one-dayer against the Proteas here on Saturday. While Manish Pandey & Vinay Kumar finds place in T20 probables.

A Mithun and Tamil Nadu opener Murali Vijay are the two new faces in a 14-man squad named on Thursday by the national selectors, who opted to rest Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag for a match largely of academic interest. India rode on Tendulkar’s unbeaten 200 on Wednesday to open up an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series in Gwalior, and the selectors have taken the opportunity to test out the bench strength in a relatively low-pressure contest.

Mumbai batsman Rohit Sharma too has been called up while Harbhajan Singh, who missed the first two games due to personal reasons, has been rested alongside paceman Praveen Kumar. Also going out, without playing a game, is Mumbai all-rounder Abhishek Nayar. Mithun hasn’t had anywhere near as much success as State-mate R Vinay Kumar in the limited-overs format this season, both in the South Zone Subbiah Pillai Trophy and in the ongoing all-India Vijay Hazare Trophy, but his remarkable run in his maiden first-class season and the fact that he has already made the Test squad appears to have worked in his favour. Vinay, on the other hand, must consider himself distinctly unlucky at having missed the bus again despite impressive performances at the zonal and national levels in the 50-over format. With Tendulkar given the game off following his historic double hundred and Sehwag allowed to rest his sore back, India are set to put out a brand new opening pair on Saturday, most likely the all-Tamil Nadu tandem of Dinesh Kaarthick and Vijay.

There was some consolation for Vinay after being, expectedly, named in the 30 probables for the World T20 in the Caribbean in April-May. Vinay is one of three Karnataka players in the list, the others being Mithun and exciting young batsman Manish Pandey, the highest scorer in this year’s Ranji Trophy competition.

Robin Uthappa, who was part of India’s victorious campaign in the inaugural World T20 in South Africa in 2007 but is in the midst of a very lean trot, finds no place. There are few surprises in the long list of 30, which will be pruned to 15 towards the end of March.
